Building Community Through Books

The Leonia Middle School students and staff continue to participate in Building Community through Books.  The book offering for this month is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.   Homeroom teachers read the story to their students on Wednesday, December 10, 2008.  The Social Studies teachers facilitated a discussion about the definition of a gift and brainstormed a list of ideas that did not require money.  Students were asked to complete a paper snowman with their gift idea.  Please take a moment to see the LMS Giving Trees displayed in our building.   They represent the gift of giving during this holiday season and throughout the year.

2008 Global Issues Seminar
at Seton Hall University

Selected 7th and 8th graders participated in the 2008 Global Issues Seminar at Seton Hall University on Friday, November 21.  A United Nations style format addressed the topics of terrorism, educating the world’s children, improving the world’s economy, controlling HIV/AIDS, and protecting the environment and basic human rights around the globe.  Evan Abouaf, Julia Cassano, Paulo Gonzalez, Keith Higgins, and Nick Topousis represented Sudan and Jerry Fratello, Monica Gonzalez-Curci, Claudia Morello, Sava Radovic, and Kira Scarangella represented Ireland.  The students did extremely well at the seminar, representing their nation’s issues effectively and scoring praise from many professors and students from Seton Hall.  Nick Topousis and Claudia Morello were selected by the seminar to speak to the General Assembly on the topic of educating the world’s children.   The students did a fantastic job of representing themselves and their school.  Evan Abouaf said, “It was a good learning experience.”  Julia Cassano added, “It was informative, fun, and I learned a lot!”  The program was co-sponsored by the Whitehead School of Diplomacy at Seton Hall University and American Educational Consultants.

Welcome to Science Tech

Students in Mrs. Lavorerio’s and Mrs. Vanore’s Science Tech classes have been quite busy.  They have recently finished a project based on a Math/Science Connection.  They have seen what it would be like to be architects in the real world by preparing scaled drawings.  Students were told they were being commissioned by The Museum of Natural History to work on a dinosaur display.  Using mathematical equations, students calculated the length of a dinosaur’s leg and the length of its body.  Their assignment was to draw in the scaled area a dinosaur of their choice as well as a scene of how the Earth looked long ago.  These marvelous drawings can be seen by visiting the second floor of our school.  Their teachers were so amazed at how each student showed such creativity and how involved they were in this assignment.

LMS /EVG Book Chat

On October 24, the sixth graders from LMS and EVG had their first of many interactions with each other this year.  Students participated in a Book Chat, facilitated by teachers from both LMS and EVG.  Both schools share the same summer reading assignment, which was the launching pad for this activity.  Groups of ten discussed and completed activities relating to Crash by Jerry Spinelli, Crispin:  The Cross of Lead by Avi, A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park, A Summer to Die by Lois Lowry, and The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.  All of these books have a survival theme, ranging from surviving middle school life to surviving tough times in your family life and everything in between.  Students and teachers had a great time making connections through the books to their daily lives and look forward to the next Book Chat in February.
