The Anna C. Scott School's philosophy is designed to help each child develop intellectually, personally/affectively, socially and physically. ACS serves to meet the needs of students in Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Considered by many in Bergen County to be an educational leader in language arts and math, the Anna C. Scott School directs the focus of learning on students meeting their academic and social potential in this rapidly changing, technologically fast-paced world.

ACS emphasizes teaching for real life purposes; the staff strives to create life-long learners who are interested in reading, writing, math and the arts. Integration of subject matter, problem solving and higher level thinking skills are stressed in all classes. In a building of nearly 700 students, the Anna C. Scott School supports a preschool class, and five classes of grades Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Our Kindergarten and preschool program has full day sessions.

The curricular program at ACS is what we are most proud of. Our curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey State Core Content Standards and the staff continues to assess all content areas in meeting the state's goals for education. Language Arts is taught through a literature-based program. To meet the needs of all students, our Kindergarten, first and second grade teachers are instructed in a multi-sensory approach to reading as well. This program supports the theory that students learn differently and in different ways. Students can be found working on cross-curricular activities and across grade levels as they explore their understanding of content.

Several of our classes are taught by two teachers, a regular education teacher and a special education teacher. Our special education students are mainstreamed both in content and specialist classes and the collaboration of both teachers allows for differentiated instruction in all classes. This philosophy of instruction serves the needs of many students and allows for greater academic success and higher self-esteem for our students.

Our Enrichment program for students identified as gifted learners is implemented within primary and upper elementary segments. Our primary Enrichment teacher, instructs all students, Kindergarten through second grade, with a weekly enrichment class. The instructor then supports teachers, within those grade levels, in extending learning to meet the needs of our most academically successful students. Our pull-out program attends to the needs of students in grades three through five and uses a thematic approach that spans the year. Content area specialists teach this program in their areas of expertise, sharing strategies with classroom teachers and other specialists to extend classroom work to challenge students.

In character education, our T.R.A.C.K. program is unique and recognized as a successful model to teach Tolerance, Respect, Attitude (positive and caring), Cooperation, and Kindness by providing multiple opportunities to acquire the skill for positive human relations.

To enhance communication and technology usage, all professional staff are trained in web design and technology-based learning; each grade, content area, or teacher has a website that conveys news, events, and pertinent information. Training is also provided on IDEA and differentiated instruction for students with special needs.

Continuing this year is the ACS After-School Enrichment Program. Under the direction of a coordinator, the program is planned for two semesters - Fall and Spring, with 10 weeks each of enrichment classes for students Grades 1 through 5. Courses include cooking, sports and fitness, ceramics, iMovies, and science. Taught by district teachers, this program meets each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
