School Art Collection


Leonia was home to some of the greatest painters, illustrators, muralists, and sculptors during the first half of the 20th century. The establishment of the Leonia School of Illustration, founded by Charles Chapman and Harvey Dunn, in 1915, further stimulated its growth as an art colony as artists came from all over the country to study and paint here.  Many of them built their homes and art studios in town.  They also participated in an annual Leonia Art Festival hosted by the Leonia Woman's Club.

*N.A. is the abbreviation for National Academician. It reflects honorary membership in one of America's oldest arts institutions, the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts. It was founded in NYC, in 1825, where it is still located and is known simply as the "National Academy.
