Leonia NHS Hosts
A visit to the LHS gym on that day revealed a scene of camaraderie among volunteers. Students, faculty, and members of the community showed their collegial spirit in performing this all-important community service. One pint of blood has the potential to save three lives. Many thanks to all our volunteers, especially those students who stayed well after the dismissal bell to complete their donation of blood. This year’s blood drive was the most successful in LHS history. |

Congratulations to the Leonia “A” Team for capturing the 2012 High Tech Academic Bowl Championship! 34 teams from throughout the state competed at High Technology High School in Lincroft, New Jersey. After defeating Marine Academy for Science & Technology in the semifinals, Leonia beat Mainland Regional of Atlantic County in the finals. Members of the LHS Varsity Quiz Bowl Team are seniors Mark Gorenstein, Noah Kay, Qingchuan Wu, and Justin Ziegler, who, together with junior Nicholas Topousis, triumphed over Mainland Regional of Atlantic County in a heart-wrenching overtime finale to win the High Tech Academic Bowl laurels. In the words of the HighTech coach, “If you thought Sunday's Tebow game was exciting, Monday's High Tech Academic Bowl Finals between Mainland Regional and Leonia H.S. was a real tug of war that went back and forth and changed leads several times. At the end of the match, after 48 questions, the score was tied 950 to 950. In overtime, Leonia prevailed, after much thought, by correctly identifying Walter Mondale's female running mate in the presidential election against Ronald Reagan.” This is the only time in club history that an LHS team has placed first. We celebrate our Quiz Bowlers and wish them good luck in future tournaments. |

Olivia Alex Wins National Writing Achievement Award
The Achievement Awards in Writing program was established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best students writers in the nation. Assessments of students writing are based on students’ chosen samples of their own best prose or poetry and on an impromptu timed theme written under supervision. A team of English teachers judges the writing, looking especially for writing that demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.
Winning students and their schools receive certificates recognizing their accomplishment, and the names of the students and their schools are posted on the NCTE website. Students also receive cards highlighting their achievement to include with their college applications.
Congratulations, Olivia!

LHS Sports Marketers Hit a Home Run
Leonia High’s Sports and Entertainment Marketing students recently had an opportunity to spend a whole day at Yankee Stadium to gain unique insight into the real world of sports marketing. Trip highlights included exclusive tours through Monument Park and the Yankee Museum, where students saw how the Yankees pay tribute to their baseball legends. The whole class was lucky enough to watch Yankee pitchers practice as well as to watch a game from a private suite.
Although spending the day at Yankee Stadium may seem like pure entertainment, the students learned a good deal from the two Yankee sales representatives who spent the day with them, obtaining valuable information on such revenue generators for the stadium as ticket sales, sponsorships, and team merchandise. Brand loyalty and stadium design are major contributors in helping the Yankee organization and Yankee stadium to remain so profitable year in and year out.
Visiting Yankee Stadium was an overall thrilling field trip. For some students, going to major league ballparks is a frequent pastime, though for others who may never have gone to a ballpark before, it was an amazing first-time experience. Students left with a better understanding of and appreciation for the sports marketing industry and what steps to take to pursue a career in it.

Leonia High School Students Recognized in the
Leonia High School Principal Edward. Bertolini announced today that seniors Justin Ziegler, Mark Gorenstein, and Inho Kim have been recognized in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Justin Ziegler – National Merit Semifinalist
About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this Finalist group. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Mark Gorenstein and Inho Kim – National Merit Commended Students
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.”
Justin Ziegler, Inho Kim and Mark Gorenstein gather after learning of their significant academic accomplishment!
