Leonia Middle School

November 2, 2011

Schools are subject to all kinds of challenges; the October storm was certainly no exception. I would like to personally thank every member of the LMS Community, including the Leonia High School faculty, staff, and students, for welcoming an entire school population into the high school. The addition of 550 students into the building may have appeared to be an easy transition, but, in fact, it was a monumental challenge.

Both Mr. Bertolini and Ms. Stein were very helpful in making a list of rooms to be utilized by our students during those bell periods in which LMS occupied the building. Mr. Collis and the custodial staff provided busses to transport teachers to and from the dark middle school, making it easy to transport the day’s teaching material. The LHS faculty members were extremely accommodating in allowing LMS teachers access to supplies and classrooms. The LHS student body was abundantly altruistic as they ushered the much younger students through the busy LHS hallways, getting everyone to where they had to be in a timely manner. LHS created a condition in which LMS core subject teachers were able to teach their planned lessons and established an environment in which students were able to effectively learn.

This emergency split session day, in anyone’s recollection, is the first of its kind in Leonia School history. I believe the cooperation extended by all involved, students, parents, teachers, and staff, not only demonstrated the can do spirit of the Leonia Educational Community but also exemplified the collaborative nature of a dedicated school district.

On behalf of a grateful middle school, I thank LHS for opening its doors to us. LMS Teachers and Students proved that we are a community of learners ready and willing to adapt to any teaching environment and learn together under most any condition. Today, the Leonia Middle School is once again brightened by the smiling faces of our students and warmed by our caring faculty.

Sincerely,

Dear Members of the LMS Community,

It seems as if retail stores have been reminding us that we are returning to school with Back-to-School sales since July 5th. If this is a continuous sign of summer, then the August letter from school serves as a sign of dwindling summer days. With these few remaining days of summer, we would like to remind each student to check their suggested reading list to ensure they have read a book from the list. We also remind everyone to check the supply lists and to take advantage of the time remaining to gather any needed items. You may find both the reading lists and the supply lists on the school’s website.

We are looking forward to the upcoming school year and to serving the community in our new roles as vice principal and principal. The year will hold some other changes for the middle school. We will begin a language arts initiative, where every student will benefit from at least one part of our transition to balanced literacy. We also begin a number of technology initiatives to enhance classroom instruction.

This mailing includes student schedules. The schedule reflects the four academic core courses (Science, Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies). It also has physical education, cycle classes and lunch. World Language, Language Arts Plus, Math Plus, Study Skills, and ESL Reading are also reflected on this schedule and vary from student to student. If you have questions about the schedule, you are always welcome to contact us or the school counselors.

There are a few quick reminders. The first day for students is Tuesday, September 6th. All students are to gather on the Rotunda Field and will be called into the gym at 8:20am. Tuesday will be a 12:50pm dismissal. We will also have a Home and School meeting in our cafeteria at 9am on Tuesday. Wednesday, September 7th begins full school days, 2:50pm dismissal.

Back-to-School Night will be held on Thursday, September 15th. Please make every effort to attend as this year Parent teacher conference sign-ups will be held in the cafeteria during Back-to-School Night. Please note, parent teacher conferences will be held on November 3rd.

Enjoy the last few days of summer and we look forward to seeing everyone on September 6th.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Bernice, Ed. D. David Saco Principal  Vice Principal
