LMS Overview
| Dr. Nicholas Bernice, Principal David Saco, Vice Principal The Leonia Middle School is comprised of students in grades six, seven, and eight. Students are offered an enriching educational, social, and cultural experience. Our programs are designed to meet the unique developmental needs of young adolescents. The middle school prides itself on a curriculum that challenges each student, invites inquiry, encourages critical thinking, and fosters collaboration. In 7th and 8th Grade students may elect to take French or Spanish. Students are also involved in cycle classes that meet each day of the week for one marking period. Cycle courses vary be grade level and include science literacy, environmental science, art, music, reading, writing, and technology. Intensive technology instruction is offered at each grade level. Teachers are scheduled for three periods per week during common planning periods to allow for the assessment of student needs and to develop instruction that is coordinated and integrated across all of the core subject areas. Guidance counselors also work closely with the staff to assist with meeting students' needs. As a result of the collaborative teaching approach, students receive the attention and support they need as them make the transition from childhood to adolescence. The administration strongly believes that every student has unique talents and abilities. The staff of Leonia Middle School is committed to educating the whole child. Therefore, in addition to our excellent academic programs, our students are offered a wide variety of extra curricular activities. Our students may participate in Student Council, Peer-to-Peer, Yearbook, Literary Magazine, Service Club, Drama Club, Brain Busters, Math Counts, Chorus, Band, Battle of the Books, and School Newspaper. Furthermore, our students may participate in Leonia Middle School's interscholastic athletic program. Leonia Middle School fields teams in boys' and girls' soccer, volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, track, softball, and baseball. We have an outstanding special education program that was recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education. Our students perform exceptionally well in a variety of statewide academic, artistic, and musical competitions. The administration and staff are thankful for a supportive and dynamic Home and School Association that sponsors a variety of activities including book fairs, assemblies, and field trips. We are also grateful for a community that actively supports the programs and Leonia Middle School. The Leonia community holds high expectation for its schools. As a result, Leonia Middle School holds high expectations for its students. We constantly strive to meet and exceed these expectations. Our school spirit and climate of learning make Leonia Middle School a unique learning community. |
