What is Hanukkah?

Hey,  Do You Know About… Hanukkah? Hanukkah is a religious holiday celebrated by Jewish people or those who practice a religion called Judaism. Hanukkah lasts eight nights and is often called the Festival of Lights.

This holiday occurs on different dates each year, with Hanukkah starting anytime from the end of November to the end of December. This year Hanukkah began on Thursday, December 10.

What is a Menorah?

The menorah is a special candelabrum with 9 candles. Each day an additional candle is lit. The ninth candle is called a shamash. This candle is usually in the center and is higher than the other eight candles to distinguish it from the other candles. This is the only candle that should be used for light. The menorah candles are to burn for at least half an hour after the sunsets.

What do people do to celebrate?

Many families celebrate Hanukkah by exchanging presents each night of the 8-day celebration.
