Our Mission

The purpose of this plan is to provide a clear and actionable roadmap for our district’s continued growth. Grounded in our mission to foster excellence in education, this strategic plan outlines the goals, priorities, and initiatives that will guide our work over the next five years. From enhancing curriculum and technology integration to strengthening school culture and student wellness, this plan is designed to move Leonia from good to great, by building on the strengths of our diverse, inclusive, and vibrant community.

Goal 1: Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology for Learning

Leonia will redesign its PK–12 curriculum to ensure all students are future-ready. A new “Profile of a Leonia Lion” will outline essential skills like critical thinking and digital literacy. District programs and instruction will be reviewed and improved to better meet student needs. Technology will be integrated through a consistent framework with training for staff. A public-facing curriculum platform will clearly show learning goals and progression across grade levels. All efforts will support our vision of preparing students for success beyond graduation.

Goal 2: District Culture

Over the next five years, Leonia will strengthen district culture by promoting inclusion, improving communication, and attracting top educators. We will expand DEI programming, engage students and staff in diversity initiatives, and build stronger ties with Edgewater. Communication will improve through updated branding, streamlined registration, and better tools for families. We’ll also enhance staff recruitment and retention with improved onboarding, mentorship, and recognition—ensuring our schools continue to grow from good to great.

Goal 3: Health & Wellness

We are committed to supporting student and staff well-being through a strong focus on health, wellness, and mental health by aligning programs across schools, integrating resilience and mindfulness practices, and embedding support into MTSS. Modernized schedules will include built-in FLEX time for academic support and enrichment. Wellness Centers are being created at each school to provide safe, supportive spaces for students. Student-led wellness initiatives and advisory groups will help shape future efforts. The district is also promoting healthy habits through nutrition education and hands-on programs.

Goal 4: Above & Beyond

We are creating a vibrant learning environment that supports students’ diverse interests in and out of the classroom. New in-school programs, electives, and enrichment in STEM, arts, and career education are being added across all grade levels. Communication is improving through tools like ParentSquare to keep families informed. Out-of-school opportunities, including clubs, field trips, and global learning, are expanding based on student interest. The district also seeks recognition through award programs and continues key initiatives like Safe Routes to Schools and Sustainable Jersey.

Goal 5: Fiscal, Physical, and Human Infrastructure

Leonia Public Schools aims to create safe, modern, and secure learning spaces that support future-ready education. Through facilities and security upgrades, strategic planning, and demographic studies, the district will ensure buildings meet evolving student needs. Responsible budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, and alternative funding sources like grants and partnerships will guide sustainable improvements. Progress will be regularly reported to the Board of Education and the community.
