🏫 Around Our Schools

Celebrating the Arts During "Music in Our Schools" Month

March is Music in Our Schools Month, and our district has been alive with the sound of talent and dedication! This month serves as a powerful reminder of how music education shapes our students’ lives; building discipline, fostering collaboration, and providing a unique outlet for creative expression. From our youngest learners exploring rhythm for the first time to our high school ensembles performing complex arrangements, the growth we see each year is harmonious.

A special thank you to our incredible music faculty for sharing their passion with our students, and to our entire community for their continued support in the arts. Whether it’s in the band room, the choir room, or on the stage, our students continue to prove that music is a vital part of a well-rounded Leonia education.

Experiencing the Magic of Reading During Read Across America

This March, ACS joined the nationwide celebration of Read Across America, to celebrate the magic of reading. From guest readers and "buddy reading" sessions to creative character dress-up days, our hallways were buzzing with literary excitement.

By exploring stories that act as both mirrors and windows, our students were reminded that reading is a powerful doorway to new perspectives and an exciting, endless adventure.

The Addams Family: A "Creepy and Kooky" Spectacular Show!

Last weekend, our LHS Limelighters brought the macabre and hilarious world of "The Addams Family" to life, and the results were absolutely amazing!

From the hauntingly beautiful set design and live orchestra to the professional-grade choreography, our talented cast and crew delivered a high-energy performance. Their powerhouse vocals and sharp comedic timing made these iconic characters come alive.

A special thank you goes to our dedicated staff for their tireless hard work and commitment to the program. We are very grateful to Mr. Vito Fiore (Director), Ms. Rachel Fiore (Assistant Director), and our creative directors: Ms. Camryn Bernstein (Crew), Ms. Candace DeLorenzo (Dance), and Mr. Michael Holak (Music).

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew for a spectacular performance!

Welcoming Our Future Cubs & Rising Lions! 🐾 LMS Hosts ACS 4th Grade and EVG 6th Grade Orientations

Last week, LMS proudly opened its doors to both our ACS 4th graders and EVG 6th graders for two exciting orientation experiences, giving our future students a meaningful introduction to life at LMS.

Our future 5th-grade Cubs enjoyed a morning of exploration, meeting their new teachers and counselor, Mr. Nyhuis, while hearing first-hand advice from a panel of current 5th graders. From touring classrooms to learning about the various clubs available and the LMS Core Values, the transition to middle school began to feel both real and inspiring.

We also welcomed our rising 7th-grade Lions from EVG, who were guided through the building in small groups by our outstanding 8th-grade student leaders. These students were introduced to the LMS Core Values, athletic programs, and academic expectations, while meeting their future counselors, Ms. Feldman and Ms. Whalen, helping them feel supported and connected as they prepare for the next step in their journey.

Across both visits, the energy was electric as students gained a meaningful introduction to the LMS Core Values and daily routines. We can't wait to officially welcome them to LMS this fall!

Growing Together: District-Wide Professional Development

On Thursday, March 19, our entire district staff gathered at Leonia High School for a day dedicated to growth, collaboration, and instructional excellence. The day featured high-impact workshops led by both expert consultants and our own talented staff, focusing on three core pillars:

  • Inclusive Pedagogy: Educators explored research-based strategies to meet the diverse needs of every learner. From specialized support for Multilingual Learners to creating rigorous challenges for our gifted and talented students, the focus remained on ensuring every student is seen and supported.
  • Safety & Security: Our teams received critical training on Behavioral Threat Assessment and chemical lab safety. Additionally, our School Safety Officers conducted their annual "Handle with Care" refresher to ensure our schools remain secure and supportive environments.
  • Instructional Innovation: Teachers dove into the future of learning by exploring various digital tools to provide faster, more personalized feedback. Our support staff and counselors also engaged in specialized sessions focused on digital communications and social-emotional alignment.
It was a highly productive day dedicated to one simple, collective goal: providing the best possible educational experience for our students.

Inspirit AI is Coming to Leonia - This Summer!

Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping how we learn and work, and this summer, students entering grades 6–12 have a unique opportunity to dive into this technology. Inspirit AI, an enrichment program developed and taught by Stanford and MIT alumni, will be hosting an in-person, project-based AI program right here at Leonia High School.

Participants will explore the foundations of AI, learn to program using Python, and discuss critical topics like ethics and bias. Students will also collaborate on group projects in fields like healthcare, sustainability, and the arts.

Program Details:
  • Instructors: AI practitioners and graduate students from Stanford and MIT.
  • Experience: No prior computer science experience is required; advanced cohorts are available.
  • Format: 30 hours of hands-on learning with separate sections for middle and high school students.

Gifted & Talented: Progress Toward our Plan Forward

Exciting things are happening with our Gifted & Talented programming!

Following a comprehensive district G&T audit conducted in the 2024-25 school year, we have been working hard to develop a structured, thoughtful plan to elevate enrichment across our schools. Our teachers have already begun deepening their practice through targeted professional learning, opening new enrichment opportunities for students.

Our "Plan Forward" timeline outlines key steps as we move toward full implementation. Our next steps include:

  • School subcommittees will convene in mid-April to finalize identification criteria, shape clear communication for families, and launch a dedicated G&T webpage.
  • In June, current 3rd and 4th graders will take the CogAT assessment as part of our rigorous identification process.
  • All of this foundational work, including curriculum enhancement across all content areas and continued staff training on best practices, is building toward the official launch of a new G&T program for 4th and 5th grade students in Fall 2026.
We're proud of the thoughtful, collaborative work going into this effort and can't wait to see it come to life for our students.

🏅 Roaring Achievements

Bergen County Unsung Heroes

We are thrilled to announce that two of our outstanding students, Miguel Cardenas and Xanaya A. Rivera, were recently honored at the Bergen County School Boards Association (BCSBA) Unsung Hero Awards Ceremony. This prestigious recognition celebrates students who lead with strong character, quiet resilience, and a dedication to their community.

To officially celebrate their significant contributions, both students were recognized with a formal resolution in their name at our March Board of Education meeting. Congratulations to Miguel and Xanaya for representing the very best of the Leonia spirit!

LMS Spelling Bee: Prince Chan Takes on North Jersey

We are incredibly proud to celebrate seventh grader Prince Chan, who represented LMS with remarkable skill and poise at the North Jersey Spelling Bee held at Bergen Community College. After winning our school-wide competition in January, Prince advanced to the regional stage to compete against the top spellers in the area.

Out of 76 elite contestants, Prince delivered an outstanding performance, making it all the way to the Top 4 of the competition! Placing fourth in such a rigorous field is an amazing achievement and a testament to Prince's hard work and dedication. Congratulations to Prince on this prestigious accomplishment and for representing the LMS community so well!

Buzzing to the Top: Mark Kim's Spelling Adventure

Fourth-grade ACS student Mark Kim recently represented our district with pride at the Bergen County Spelling Bee held at Bergen Community College. Competing against 75 of the area’s most talented young spellers, Mark showcased incredible focus and determination throughout the event.

Mark’s impressive effort led him all the way to round three, ultimately finishing in the top 30 of all contestants! We are so proud of Mark’s commitment to academic excellence and the poise he displayed while representing the ACS community on the county stage. Congratulations, Mark!

5th Graders Find Their Voice: Podcasting for a Purpose

Our 5th grade students recently wrapped up their Arguments and Advocacy reading unit with an engaging and creative culminating project—producing their very own podcasts!

Working collaboratively in small groups, students researched, discussed, and developed thoughtful arguments both for and against the use of plastics. Throughout the process, they demonstrated strong critical thinking skills as they evaluated evidence, considered multiple perspectives, and crafted clear, persuasive claims. The podcast format allowed students to bring their ideas to life in a dynamic way. From scriptwriting to recording, each group took ownership of their learning—practicing speaking and listening skills while learning how to effectively communicate their viewpoints.

From Awareness to Action: Freshmen Learn About Bias

On March 13, freshmen at Leonia High School participated in a critical presentation led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (BCPO) focused on the real-world impact of bias incidents and bias crimes. The session provided a deep dive into how these actions are defined and the lasting harm they cause within a community. Students learned that because a significant number of reported incidents involve teenagers, it is especially vital for young people to understand their role in fostering a respectful, inclusive environment.

The discussion centered on the BCPO’s powerful message: “Stop Hate: Be the Change, Educate Yourself and Others, Respect All Ways of Life, and Be Heard. Report Bias Crimes." By encouraging students to reflect on how their words and actions affect those around them, the program reinforced the importance of standing up against hate and supporting one another. This partnership with the Prosecutor’s Office remains a key part of our commitment to ensuring every student feels safe and valued in our school community.

Thank you to the Leonia Police Department for helping coordinate this important opportunity.

Shaping Art: Third Graders Inspired by Hilke Macintyre

Our third graders are currently designing ceramic bas relief tiles, drawing inspiration from the unique style of artist Hilke MacIntyre. This hands-on project encourages artistic expression and attention to detail while fostering a deep appreciation for contemporary art.

We can't wait to see these textured masterpieces come to life!

Finishing Strong: 7th Graders Shine in Literary Analysis Writing

Our 7th grade students are bringing their hard work to an impressive close as they put the finishing touches on their Literary Analysis Essays in ELA class. Over the past several weeks, students have engaged deeply with texts, developing thoughtful claims, gathering strong evidence, and crafting clear, well-structured arguments.

In these final stages, classrooms have been filled with focused energy as students revise, edit, and refine their writing. They are carefully strengthening introductions, sharpening their analysis, and ensuring their conclusions leave a lasting impact. This culminating task reflects not only students’ understanding of literature, but also their growth as critical thinkers and writers.

A Broadway Boost for Our Limelighters

Earlier this month, our Limelighters participated in an intensive musical theater workshop hosted by the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). Students sharpened their performance skills through professional vocal and acting exercises, exploring the same high-level techniques used in elite theater training.

Our performers certainly put those new skills to use during their latest production of "The Addams Family." This workshop helped them take their stage presence to the next level!

Big Dreams Start at ACS

Ms. Daley’s class welcomed special visitors from LHS during Read Across America Week.

Together they read the classic Oh, the Places You'll Go! and then spent time writing about their hopes, goals, and dreams.

It was a wonderful moment of connection and inspiration for our students as they imagined the exciting paths ahead!

💻 Tech Tips & Updates

Digital Privacy & Safety: Protecting Your Student’s Data

When using powerful tools like Gemini and Magic School AI, our school’s top priority is safeguarding student information. We want families to know that our educational versions of these tools are governed by strict privacy agreements (compliant with FERPA and COPPA).

Unlike the "public" versions of AI you might see in the news, the data your child enters in our school-managed Gemini accounts is not used to train the AI, is not sold to advertisers, and is not visible to the public. However, we still teach students the "Golden Rule of Data": even with protections in place, you should never share "PII" (Personally Identifiable Information)—such as full names, home addresses, or private family stories—with an AI.

By practicing "Privacy First," we ensure our students reap the benefits of technology while maintaining a secure digital footprint.

Tech Tip: The "Anonymizing" Hack

A great way to stay safe is to teach your child to use Generic Placeholders. If they are asking Gemini for feedback on a personal essay or a social studies project, they should swap out specific names for general ones.
  • Instead of: "My friend Sarah and I went to the park in Leonia..."
  • Try: "My friend and I went to a local park..."
  • This allows the AI to give great feedback without ever "knowing" who the student or their friends are!
